1- Eat Napoli Pizza

Naples is literally where pizza was invented and it is often said to be the best in the world.

But please, don’t let the simplicity of these statements fool you into believing you will die over every slice you pick up in this city. I stayed in Naples long enough to know there are plenty of disappointing slices, especially from street vendors. However, finding the good Naples pizza doesn’t take much effort, and with a little help from Yelp, Trip Advisor, or AMaeTV, you’ll be sure to have a great Naples pizza experience.

There are many places around town where you can eat amazing Napoli pizza. L’Antica Pizzeria is featured in the Top 10 Things To Do In Naples video because it is the oldest pizzeria in Naples, originally operating as a food truck back in 1738. Today, it still serves up some classically delicious Naples pizza.

2- Visit Mergellina

When you travel to Naples, you simply must visit to the lovely area known as Mergellina. Mergellina is basically just the waterfront roadways surrounding the bay of Naples where you can walk, run, and dine in a beautiful setting right along the water. There are many waterfront restaurants here, but many are overpriced and not quite as ‘authentic’ as places deeper in the city. Nevertheless, be sure to enjoy a stroll, take some photos, have a street vendor snack and enjoy a bit of relaxed time exploring the rocky shores around the Bay of Naples.

3- Castel dell’Ovo

Castle dell’Ovo is an ancient castle built in the 12th century that still stands as a centerpiece of Naples. It is open to the public during limited hours and is FREE to enter which makes it one of the best things to do in Naples. Castel dell’Ovo, or ‘castle of the egg’, gained it’s name from the legend of a medieval sorcerer named Virgil who is said to have placed a magical egg inside the foundations of the castle to support its structure. I think ol’ Virgil did a great job because once inside the castle today, you’ll be instantly transported back to medieval times and find what almost feels like an entire medieval city in itself.

Although yoga was not likely practiced in the region during the era of this castle, I found this castle to be great place for yogatography.

4- Sunning on the Rocks

The Bay of Naples is definitely the heart of town, and many Italians flock to the waters to spend the summer. By no means is it the best place to swim, but if you are looking to get some sun, consider posting up along the rocky shores or sparse sandy beaches in between to enjoy great views of Naples, Castel dell’Ovo and Mount Vesuvius.

5- Shopping in Chiaia

Chiaia is definitely THE shopping neighborhood in Naples. You can find all the typical high end designer stores as well as eclectic shops and boutiques. They sell fashionable shoes, jewelry, handbags, home decor, sneakers, lingerie and swimsuits. There are LOTS of bikinis sold in Chiaia, perhaps due to its proximity to the Amalfi Coast. There are also lots of sneaker shops.

SO MANY SNEAKER shops.

The great thing about Italy is that they make a lot of their own goods, especially leather and jewelry. I love making a purchase from a shop or individual knowing that the item is a high quality, hand crafted piece. That being said, you will find a lot of knock off imported goods sold on the super cheap as well. It’s pretty easy to pick these out and differentiate as the knock offs are mostly found at temporary vendor stands or fly by night stores. Don’t buy them.

It’s important to know that Italians hold unique hours for their shops, and are generally open from 9am – 9pm BUT have a period from 1pm-4pm during which they are closed. Weekend hours are even more limited with shops closing by 5pm and often not opening on Sunday at all. In August (shortly after most of this video was shot) all the stores close for the month and everybody leaves Naples for summer holiday. Although it’s definitely not the best month for shopping, the city does feel quite amazing when it’s empty.

6- Visit Piazza Del Plebiscito

Piazza del Plebiscito

The lovely Piazza del Plebiscito

Piazza Del Plebiscito is one of the larger piazzas and more exciting piazzas in Naples. Legendary artists such as Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, and Muse have performed at Piazza Del Plebiscito and an AMaeTV video was filmed in part in this very piazza. It you haven’t seen it yet you can watch it HERE!

7- Cafe at Gran Caffe Gambrinus

Stop into an the famous Gran Cafe Gambrinus for a coffee, cocktail, or delicious Italian treat. It’s important to understand that the ‘Caffes’ in Italy are not exactly just coffee shops. They are also places to hang out, socialize, and consume either cafe OR alcohol. So grab some friends, grab a table, and soak in the cultural cafe experience while enjoying pastries, gelato, or other desserts with your Italian espresso.

8- Have Aperitivo

Aperitivo is the best thing ever. It’s essentially a 5-7pm ‘happy hour’, but rather than drink specials, you are provided with light snacks or even a buffet of appetizer food.  I am a huge fan of olives, cheeses, salads and general finger foods (especially in Italy), so the Italian aperitivo makes afternoon drinks well worth buying. A great trick for traveling in Europe is to find the best aperitivo, order up some delicious cocktails or wine and make a light meal out of it!

9- Visit Galleria Umberto

Galleria Umberto I is a gorgeous public shopping gallery that was modeled after Galleria Emanuele II, a structure in Milan that is said to be the most extravagant mall in the world. Galleria Umberto was built in Naples between 1887 and 1891 as part of the ‘Risanamento’ or project to make the city of Naples healthy again. It was shattered by bombs during World War II but was restored after many years. Today, Galleria Umberto is a fantastic structure to visit and photograph and if you’re there at the right time, you might be able to find some decent shopping too.

10- Ride A Scooter

Getting around by scooter, or moto, in Naples is very much a part of Italian life and culture. This might not be the easiest activity for a tourist in Naples to take on, but if you do dare to rent one, you’ll be sure to have a thrilling experience riding it through the crazy traffic that fills the city.

The Guardian has some great details and recommendations HERE for renting and riding a scooter in Naples.
